Athletics & Buff Pride

Every member of the Golden Buffalo Marching Band knows the band’s motto by heart: tradition, heartbeat, spirit and pride. What every member of the band may not know, though, is where those four words came from.

In 1905, CU women’s field hockey made university history as the first women’s team to play on Gamble Field, an outdoor sports stadium on campus. The team was organized by the student-run Women’s Athletic Association, which began the same year and aimed to cultivate more competitive women’s sports at the university.

Spotlighting Our Notable Buffs

Fred Folsom

One of the founding figures of Colorado football, Folsom coached the Buffs during the program's formative years and led CU to multiple conference championships. As the university’s second official head football coach, Folsom compiled a 77-23-2 record throughout his three different stints as head coach (1895-99, 1901-02, 1908-15). His influence was so significant that CU's stadium, Folsom Field, is named in his honor.
