Local CU-Boulder Students Receive Jacob Van Ek Award
Nine undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Colorado at Boulder have received the prestigious Jacob Van Ek Award.
The recipients were honored this month for outstanding academic achievement and contributions to the university and Boulder communities. The faculty members the students named as mentors also were recognized.
The award was established in 1973 to honor Jacob Van Ek, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at CU-Boulder from 1929 to 1959. Van Ek died in 1994 at the age of 97.
Following is a list of this year's Jacob Van Ek Award recipients, their majors and faculty mentors. Each student also received a $400 award.
Colorado
- Boulder: Anna Koclanes, English and women's studies, mentor Cathy Comstock of the Farrand Residential Academic Program.
- Cascade: Lorelei Rutledge, communication and English, mentor Associate Professor Bryan Taylor of communication.
- Colorado Springs: Chad Eicher, economics, mentor Professor James Palmer, director of the Conference on World Affairs.
- Denver: Anthony Edwards, biochemistry and molecular, cellular and developmental biology, mentor Associate Professor Tin Tin Su of MCD Biology.
- Englewood: Kari Trotsky, humanities, mentor Cathy Comstock of the Farrand Residential Academic Program.
- Greenwood Village: Gabriel Gelman, political science, mentor Senior Instructor Thad Tecza of political science.
- Littleton: Bobbie Jo Wessels, political science, mentor Vincent McGuire of the Farrand Residential Academic Program.
Missouri
- Blue Springs: Melissa Hamline, distributed studies, mentor Professor Mark Winey of molecular, cellular and developmental biology.
Washington
- Issaquah: Hannah Kirby, integrative physiology, mentor Lecturer J.T. Young of sociology.
