FAQs

Who are we?
The Model United Nations is a simulation of the United Nations. Students assume the roles of ambassadors to the United Nations and debate the current issues on the U.N.'s agenda. Through diplomacy and negotiation, Model U.N. students seek out solutions to complex global concerns such as environment, economic development, refugees, AIDS, conflict resolution, disarmament, and human rights.

What do we do? There are two basic components of the Model U.N. experience. First, students go through an intensive preparation process where they research the countries they will represent, organize positions, prepare policy papers, draft resolutions and practice the rules of procedure and public speaking techniques. Second, the students become the "ambassadors" during the Model U.N. conference which can last between one and five days. The conference allows students to show their stuff by applying what they have learned and working with other students to write resolutions on a given topic. Students caucus with other countries representatives to negotiate resolution wording and the specifics of a topic.

What can I get out of MUN? The Model United Nations teaches a student the importance of tolerance and, more importantly the patience of resolving differences through dialogue and compromise. MUN teaches communication skills and gives students confidence that they can work with others to solve problems. A good understanding of world affairs is also important to all walks of life. At our meetings we hold open discussions about issues effecting countries all over the world and encourage students to think critically about not only our own countries position on these matters, but different perspectives as well.

How can I join? Joining MUN is easy. Just come to one of our introduction meetings this and sign up. We will cover all the basics at those first meetings. Meetings will be posted on the Calendar page.
