The University of Chicago Center for East Asian Studies

2024 Summer Kuzushiji Workshop

The Center for East Asian Studies at the University of Chicago is delighted to announce our  2024 Summer Kuzushiji Workshop.  This year’s workshop will be held form June 3rd to June 7th and will once again feature two levels of instruction.  The instructor for the introductory course will be Dr. Nobuko Toyosawa of the Oriental Institute of the Czech Republic, and the intermediate/advanced course will be taught by Professor Yoshitaka Yamamoto of the National Institute of Japanese Literature.  We welcome applications from students, staff, faculty, and independent scholars who wish to develop expertise in reading handwritten and print materials inscribed in kuzushiji.  The workshop will be conducted in Japanese and applicants should have some familiarity with hentaigana.

The only cost for participants is a $100 program fee, which covers the cost of a catered lunch each day and workshop materials. We are able to offer limited financial aid to participants from institutions that do not offer support. Participants are responsible for making their own arrangements for lodging.

Applications can be submitted here: https://ceas.wufoo.com/forms/reading-kuzushiji-summer-2024/.  The deadline is April 29th.

Questions can be directed to Prof. Susan Burns (slburns@uchicago.edu).
