The set of ideas and approaches gathered under the heading “new materialism” is highly varied. Among the constants, however, is a firm rejection of anything that might seem “religious,” and still more of anything “mysterious.” However, If we look at the long history of materialism, all the way back to pre-Socratic philosophy and through some of recent physics, and at the history of (particularly Christian) mysticism, something more interesting emerges: the possibility of a materialist mysticism, or of a mystical materialism.

Karmen MacKendrick is a professor in the philosophy department at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York. This year she is a fellow at the Society for the Humanities at Cornell University, working on the theme of Skin, which she is interpreting in terms of boundaries and limits that also reveal things to us. Her interest in matter and mystery emerges out of a long-standing set of engagements with bodies and their meaningfulness, including connections to language and to desire. Her most recent book is The Matter of Voice: Sensuous Soundings, published this year by Fordham. Her work crosses contemporary continental philosophy, late ancient and medieval Christianity, queer theory, and literature.
