Barometers of School Safety Assessments
The Safe Communities ~ Safe Schools Initiative offers a variety of instruments, free of charge to Colorado schools, to help administrators better understand their school’s strengths and needs. In addition to our Pre-Planning Assessment Checklists, which contains tools to aid school-community planning teams in identifying areas of strength and weakness that could affect school and community safety, our Barometers of School Safety include school climate surveys as well as a school safety and security assessment.

• SPARK: Elementary School Survey
• VOLT: Middle/High School Survey
• CHARGE: Administrator/Staff Survey (Fall 2009)
• GRID: Parent/Community Survey (Fall 2009)
School Safety and Security Assessment
• School Safety Assessment
Climate surveys can be conducted online through a safe and secure website at no charge. If a paper and pencil survey is preferred, schools will be required to pay for paper copies, data entry, data cleaning and analysis. Student, staff, parent and community answers will be anonymous and the identity of schools/districts will remain confidential.
Shortly after the survey is completed, CSPV will issue a comprehensive report to the school (also for no charge), detailing their school climate. The report will alert schools to their strengths, as well as areas that might need improvement. Additionally, the report will indicate how their individual school compares with both Colorado and national school safety and climate statistics, where available. School administrators will also have secure access to their own data only, downloadable in Excel format for further analysis.
The goal of using one of the Barometers of School Safety is to improve learning environments for all students and administrators across the state of Colorado. By participating in the Current School Safety Survey, we will have a clearer understanding of what is happening in our schools so that we can better address issues that students and schools may be facing.
