Overview
In an effort to address the immediate concerns of the Colorado education community, the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence (CSPV) of the University of Colorado, introduced the Safe Communities~Safe Schools Initiative in the fall of 1999 with help from The Colorado Trust and several other key Colorado funders.
New federal funding from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, secured by Senator Ken Salazar, has allowed CSPV to again aid Colorado schools in improving their school safety. The renewed Safe Communities ~ Safe Schools (SCSS) effort will offer school safety research and prevention expertise by providing informational resources and technical assistance in violence prevention planning and evidenced-based programming.
SCSS can assist schools in a variety of ways, from answering research and prevention questions to working with local educators, law enforcement officers, politicians and community members to implement our Safe School model. This model provides a comprehensive framework for improving school safety by creating a planning team to help understand the school's climate and safety strengths and needs. The results of the assessments allow schools to identify appropriate strategies and evidenced-based programs to address their needs.
