When do I register if I’m a current 3L?
Your registration time assignment is set to begin Friday, April 10 at 12:30 pm. You may continue registering and adjusting your schedule through early June. The registration system will reopen in early August.
When do I register if I’m a current 2L?
Your registration time assignment is set to begin Friday, April 10 at 12:30 pm. You may continue registering and adjusting early June. The registration system will reopen in early August.
When will I be registered if I’m a current 1L?
Your registration time assignment is set to begin Friday, April 17 at 1:30 pm. You may continue registering and adjusting your schedule through early June. The registration system will reopen in early August. There will be a “How to Register” session on both April 6 in Room 206 and April 14 in Room 207.
Where can I find the Fall or Spring course offerings?
Course offerings can be found through (1) Course Schedules by course title or by schedule, or (2) Course Search through numerous criteria. Through these vehicles, you can view course syllabi, professor bios, and textbook information. You may also use Course Lookup on CUConnect. Follow these instructions:
- Click the Courses tab **
- Under Course Lookup, select the term
- Choose Graduate from the Choose Level dropdown
- Select Law from the Search by Department dropdown
- Click the Search button
- This brings you to all of our courses for the semester. To see additional pages, simply hit the “Next” button at the bottom of the page
- Click on the course hyperlink to see more information about the course
- To view FCQ results for a course, click on the Faculty Course Questionnaire hyperlink below each course that you are searching.
- **Notice that you can build various schedules by clicking on the Schedule Planner link.
What is a “Stop” on my registration?
A “stop” is the university’s mechanism for preventing students from registering if, for example, they owe money for library fines; or if undergraduate transcripts have not yet been received; or if immunization records have not been received.
How can I check to see if I’m eligible to register?
Prior to registration, logon to CUConnect and select the “Registration” tab to see if you are eligible to register.
How many credit hours do I need to graduate?
You need 89 credit hours to graduate. However, if you are pursuing a Certificate or the Tax Emphasis Program, you need 95 credit hours to graduate. See the specific information: http://www.colorado.edu/law/centers/programs/programs.htm.
What are the required courses after my first year?
Legal Ethics, Evidence, a Seminar, and a course that satisfies the Practice Requirement, and serving as a juror for a clinic or trial advocacy mock trial. See Law School Rule 3-2-3: http://www.colorado.edu/law/academics/requirements.htm.
What courses satisfy the Practice Requirement?

What is the “Practice Cap”?
The Law School rules allow you to take up to 14 credit hours in courses that count against the Practice Cap.
Do Externship credits satisfy the Practice Requirement?
No, but they count against the “Practice Cap”.
Where do I find information about course prerequisites?

For which courses do 1Ls, 2Ls, and 3Ls have priority
2Ls and 3Ls have priority for all courses except for the following courses for which current 1Ls have priority when registering: Agency Partnership, Corporations, Foundations of Natural Resources Law, Income Taxation, Payment Systems, Secured Transactions, Intersession Trial Advocacy, and Wills and Trusts.
When can 2Ls register for courses set as priority for current 1Ls?
Registration restriction will be lifted on Friday, April 24, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. for 2Ls and 3Ls to register for these courses. If you try to register ahead of this time, you will get a “Classification Restriction” error message.
How do I register for the spring half of a yearlong course?
The Registrar will register you into the spring portion of the course. You do not need to self-register for these courses.
For how many credit hours can I self-register?
You may register for 18 credit hours on your own. To register for more than 18 credit hours, you must first get the Associate Dean’s written permission. Then, email the Registrar your requests for credit hours over the18 and the Registrar will override the system to either enroll you or place your name on a waitlist. Please note the Rules of the Law School: §3-3-3 Maximum and Minimum Class Schedule. “No student shall receive credit toward the JD degree for more than 18 credit hours in one semester. A student may register for fewer than 10 credit hours in one semester of the second or third year of study. In all other regular semesters, a student shall register for at least 10 credit hours unless an exception for extraordinary cause is approved by the Dean’s Office. A first-year student must obtain permission of the Dean's Office to register for fewer than the full first-year schedule of courses.”
Is there a distinction between 6000-, 7000-, and 8000-level courses?
The 6000-level courses are oriented toward 2Ls; 7000-level toward 3Ls; and the 8000-series is designated as seminars.
How do I know if there are open seats in courses?
You may use “Planning Tools” on CUConnect to see the number of students enrolled, the maximum seating, and the number of students on a waitlist. Follow these instructions:
- Go to CUConnect
- Click on "Planning Tools" in the menu box that appears on the left side of your screen
- Select "Boulder Campus Fall 2008" and click the "Go" button
- Click the tab "Search Courses"
- Type Laws (or just type L) in Step 1
- Skip down to Step 6 and hit the "Start Search" button
- This brings you to all of our courses for the semester. To see additional pages, simply hit the "Next" button at the bottom of the page
- To view more information about courses, including course descriptions, simply click the yellow "Info" button next to the name of the course.
What are Student Opportunity Fees?
These are optional fees that you may choose to pay for many activity funds on campus. NOTE: When your registration time assignment begins, you MUST determine this before the system will allow you to begin selecting your courses. You may not enter your courses in CUConnect until you have passed through this screen.
What number do I use to register for my courses –course number or call number?
Use the 5-digit CALL NUMBER.
How do I place myself on a waitlist?
To be put on the waitlist for courses with a waitlist established, click on the “Waitlist” option and then “Submit” button. If you do not select it, the system will NOT place you on the waitlist.
How do I know if I have been enrolled in a course in which I was waitlisted?
You may wish to periodically check your schedule on CUConnect. When a position opens, a generated email will notify you that are enrolled. Even if you do not receive an email, you should periodically check your schedule.
CUConnect asks if I want to take a course Pass/Fail. Can I decide this?
No. That rule does not apply to law students.
Registration Checklist:
- Check your eligibility to register – time assignment and no “Stops”.
- Have your plan and alternate plans ready. Be sure to have the CALL NUMBERS for your preferred courses (the 5-digit number).
- Logon to CUConnect.
- Click the Courses Tab.
- Select the term for registration.
- Click the Register for Classes button
- Click the Student Opportunity Fees tab at the bottom FIRST – the system will not allow you to begin registering for classes until you have completed this Student Opportunity Fees section. You cannot begin this process until your time assignment begins.
- Click the Register tab at the bottom of the page.
- Type in your CALL NUMBERS in each Call Number box - you can either click "Submit" after each entry, or you can enter all Call Numbers, and then click "Submit" at the end.
- If the class has gone to a Waitlist, click on the word “Waitlist”, and click Submit if you wish to be placed on the Waitlist.
- When you are finished entering your courses, click the "Next Step" tab at the bottom of the page.
- Follow the instructions to print out a copy of your schedule by clicking the "Schedule" tab; click the "Account Balance" tab to check your bill.
- When you've completed your registration, click the "Exit" button to logout.
- WARNING: The system will turn off after about 3-10 minutes of inactivity.
