Did You Know?

The department has recently changed its name to reflect a broader focus on Asian languages, literatures, and cultural studies. In addition to Chinese and Japanese, ALC now offers undergraduate courses in Korean, Hindi, Farsi, Indonesian, and Arabic. A PhD program in Chinese and Japanese is on the way.

Asian Languages and Civilizations

Areas of Study and Research

The MA in Asian Languages and Civilizations may be pursued in one of four different tracks: Chinese Language and Literature; Japanese Language and Literature; Chinese Language and Civilization, and Japanese Language and Civilization. Graduate students work in a broad interdisciplinary context, requiring a study of literary, historical, and cultural texts across the millennia of Chinese and Japanese written materials.

Faculty research includes various specialized topics in Chinese and Japanese literature and cultural history, from early times to the present day, in fields such as poetry, literary criticism, manuscript studies, religious and intellectual history, as well as fiction, drama, and film.

Degrees Offered

MA
Requires 24 hours of approved graduate course work plus a thesis, or 30 hours of course work without a thesis, and successful completion of the required comprehensive examinations.
