Areas of Study and ResearchJILA provides abundant professional and recreational opportunities for prospective graduate students. The interdisciplinary institute is operated jointly by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Colorado (CU). JILA offers a broad range of research topics in the fields of astrophysics, atomic and molecular physics, biophysics, chemical physics, chemistry, materials science, optical physics, and precision measurement.
Degrees Offered
PhD
Prospective graduate students should apply to specific departments at the University
of Colorado. Once accepted, graduate students can then select research topics
with JILA faculty members. Upon graduation, students received their degree
from the CU department in which they are enrolled. Participating CU departments:
- Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences
- Chemistry and Biochemistry
- Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology
- Physics
Admission
Graduate School Minimum Admissions Standards
Individual graduate departments may have additional or more restrictive
standards by which they evaluate graduate applicants. However, the Graduate
School at CU-Boulder has established minimum standards for graduate admission.
Applicants must:
- Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, or have done work equivalent to that required for such a degree.
- Show promise of ability to pursue advanced study and research, as judged by the student’s scholastic record.
- Have adequate preparation to enter graduate study in the chosen field.
- Have at least a 2.75 (2.00=C) undergraduate grade point average. Note: Applicants who cannot meet this undergraduate standard may still secure regular admission if they have completed 9 semester hours of relevant graduate course work with at least a 3.25 average.
Chemical Physics Admissions Requirements
Individual graduate departments may have additional or more restrictive standards
by which they evaluate graduate applicants. However, the Graduate School at CU-Boulder
has established minimum standards for graduate admission. Applicants must:
- Must be a graduate student in good standing in one of the member departments: Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences; Chemistry and Biochemistry; Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology; and Physics.
- Graduate students in Chemical Physics at the University of Colorado are admitted to a graduate program in participating departments that have chemical physics faculty and must meet the requirements for admission and degree completion in their home department.
Financial Support Available
Applicants typically get financial support from their home department, including
Teaching Assistantships and Research Assistantships.
