Since its inception in 1999, the Graduate Committee on the Arts and Humanities' Dissertation Award has been conferred on Department of History Ph.D. students in seven of the eight years the honor has been given. Three of these dissertations have subsequently been expanded into full-length, published monographs. Areas of Study and ResearchThe History Graduate Program offers M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Medieval and Early Modern Europe, Modern Europe, the U.S. to 1877, and the U.S. since 1865. We also offer an M.A. degree in Asian History. The department collaborates on three dual M.A. programs that combine coursework in history plus East Asian Languages and Civilizations, Religious Studies, or the Museum and Field Studies Certificate Program. History faculty research and publish in a variety of subfields, including social history, intellectual history, cultural history, borderlands history, history of gender and sexuality, and diplomatic history.
Related areas of study combine a Master’s degree in history plus East Asian languages and civilizations (Chinese or Japanese) or Religious Studies, or the Museum and Field Studies Certificate Program.
Degrees Offered
MA
Requires 30 hours of approved graduate study or 24 hours of approved graduate
study plus 6 thesis hours and a successful thesis defense, as well as satisfactory
completion of a written examination.
PhD
Requires 45 hours of postbaccalaureate approved graduate study, in addition
to the minimum 30 hours of dissertation credit hours required by the Graduate
School; demonstrated proficiency in a foreign language; satisfactory completion
of written and oral examinations; and a successful dissertation defense.
Admission
Graduate School Minimum Admissions Standards
Individual graduate departments may have additional or more restrictive
standards by which they evaluate graduate applicants. However, the Graduate
School at CU-Boulder has established minimum standards for graduate admission.
Applicants must:
- Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university,
or have done work equivalent to that required for such a degree.
- Show promise of ability to pursue advanced study and research, as
judged by the student’s scholastic record.
- Have adequate preparation to enter graduate study in the chosen field.
- Have at least a 2.75 (2.00=C) undergraduate grade point average. Note: Applicants who cannot meet this undergraduate standard may still secure regular admission if they have completed 9 semester hours of relevant graduate course work with at least a 3.25 average.
History Admissions Requirements
Applicants must:
- Hold a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university
- Submit GRE scores
- A short writing sample
- Submit transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended
- 4 letters of recommendation
- A statement of purpose
Minimum Standards for Applicants
Typical applicants have an undergraduate grade point average of at least
3.70, graduate GPA of 3.90 and verbal GRE scores over 85 percent.
Financial Support Available
The department has three endowed fellowships for incoming students: the
Lois S. Corriell Fellowship, the John Rice Fellowship in British History, and the Thompson Endowed Fellowship in American History.
Support through teaching assistantships is available to both MA and PhD
students. GPTI support is restricted to PhD students who have passed the
comprehensive exam. Departmental support is competitive and is based on
class rankings established by a yearly application process.
