Did You Know?

The mathematics department collaborates with elementary schools in the Denver-Boulder area to enrich the math experience for K-5 students. CU-Boulder instructors visit classrooms once a week and help engage the students in hands-on activities and game playing. The instructors also work with teachers and encourage parental involvement in order to enhance meaningful math activities.

Mathematics

Areas of Study and Research

Research interests include algebra, algebraic geometry, differential equations, differential geometry, logic and foundations, modern analysis, number theory, probability, and topology. MS students may minor in any department where mathematics plays a significant role.

Degrees Offered

MA
Requires 30 semester hours of approved graduate study with a presentation of a mathematics project or thesis before a faculty committee.

MS in Applied Mathematics
Requires 30 hours of graduate course work, at least 18 hours of which is in the math department, and includes two full-year sequences. One of these must be MATH 5600-5610: Numerical Analysis. At least 6 hours of graduate work must be in an approved area of application and include a full-year sequence. You may minor in any department where mathematics plays a significant role. The student must make a presentation of a mathematics project or thesis before a faculty committee.

PhD
Requires 30 hours of approved graduate study and 30 hours of dissertation credit, successful completion of preliminary and comprehensive examinations, and a successful dissertation defense. A PhD student is required to make written translations of mathematical articles in one of the following languages: French, German, Italian, or Russian.

Admission

Graduate School Minimum Admissions Standards
Individual graduate departments may have additional or more restrictive standards by which they evaluate graduate applicants. However, the Graduate School at CU-Boulder has established minimum standards for graduate admission. Applicants must:

  1. Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, or have done work equivalent to that required for such a degree.
  2. Show promise of ability to pursue advanced study and research, as judged by the student’s scholastic record.
  3. Have adequate preparation to enter graduate study in the chosen field.
  4. Have at least a 2.75 (2.00=C) undergraduate grade point average. Note: Applicants who cannot meet this undergraduate standard may still secure regular admission if they have completed 9 semester hours of relevant graduate course work with at least a 3.25 average.

Mathematics Admissions Requirements
Applicants must:

  1. Hold a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university.
  2. Have an undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0.
  3. Have demonstrated mathematical maturity and accomplishment roughly at the level of a successful mathematics major at CU Boulder. Must also demonstrate mathematical potential: success in courses in advanced calculus and abstract algebra help demonstrate this potential.
  4. GRE scores: General and mathematics subject specific exams are mandatory.
  5. Submit three letters of recommendation from mathematicians.

Minimum Standards for Applicants
There are no preapplications or pre-evaluations needed for applicants.

Financial Support Available
Most financial support is for teaching assistantships, which include tuition waivers. There are some research assistantships and some fellowship awards.
