CU-Boulder’s Speech-Language and Hearing Center offers comprehensive assessment and intervention services to about 75 children and adults in the Denver-Boulder area on a weekly basis. Examples of programs include audiological assessment and rehabilitation, individual speech and hearing assessment and intervention, a Parkinson’s Group, and a Child Learning Center.

Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences
Areas of Study and ResearchThere are two areas of study available at the MA level: one prepares students for clinical practice and professional certification in speech-language pathology, and the other offers students the opportunity to pursue a research focus without clinical preparation. Two areas of study are also available at the Doctoral level: the PhD program is designed to prepare students for research careers, and the Doctorate of Audiology (AUD) prepares students for clinical practice and professional certification in the field of audiology.
Degrees Offered
MA
Requires completion of 30 course credits and clinical educaton requirements or research requirements.
AuD
Four-year post-baccalaureate degree that requires approximately 108 graduate-level credits consisting of academic coursework, clinical practicum experiences, capstone project and advanced clinical rotations. Students with certification in audiology may also apply to the program and may apply previous graduate coursework to a portion of the requirements.
PhD
Requires study within an area of specific interest within the disciplines of speech, language, and hearing sciences, with mentorship from faculty. Options are available for a dual PhD in SLHS and in Neuroscience and SLHS and Cognitive Science. There is no foreign language requirement.
Admission
Graduate School Minimum Admissions Standards
Individual graduate departments may have additional or more restrictive
standards by which they evaluate graduate applicants. However, the Graduate
School at CU-Boulder has established minimum standards for graduate admission.
Applicants must:
- Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university,
or have done work equivalent to that required for such a degree.
- Show promise of ability to pursue advanced study and research, as
judged by the student’s scholastic record.
- Have adequate preparation to enter graduate study in the chosen field.
- Have at least a 2.75 (2.00=C) undergraduate grade point average.
Note: Applicants who cannot meet this undergraduate standard may still
secure regular admission if they have completed 9 semester hours of
relevant graduate course work with at least a 3.25 average.
Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences Admissions Requirements
Applicants must:
- Hold a baccalaureate degree, or its equivalent from an accredited college or university.
- Have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.25, a masters GPA of at least 3.5 if applying for the PhD program.
- GRE scores: 1100 desired on verbal and quantitative portions
- Four letters of recommendation.
- Personal statement of academic interests.
