School of Education

Teaching in today's classrooms, whether in schools, colleges, business, industry, or government, is filled with many opportunities. One of the most interesting challenges is meeting the needs of a increasingly diverse student population. The School of Education has made a commitment to promoting quality education with an emphasis on cultural pluralism. You will be versed in traditional teaching wisdom and prepared to teach a diverse generation of students at the completion of your teacher education training.

  • The School of Education offers course work leading to licensure in education to students who have completed a bachelor's degree or who simultaneously complete their bachelor's degree and an education program at CU-Boulder. The school does not offer an independent bachelor's degree.

  • New undergraduates must be admitted to a primary major other than education through a CU-Boulder college or school. It is strongly recommended that students declare their intent to pursue teacher education through the School of Education's Office of Student Services as soon as possible by declaring preeducation as a second major prior to admission to any CU-Boulder teacher education program. This can be done as early as the freshman year in order to receive timely advising.

  • A School of Education technology coordinator supports faculty integration and development of technologies for curriculum, research, and outreach. Projection stations, wireless laptops, a smartboard, and an educational software review center are all available here.

  • Students learn to foster diversity by taking classes that promote understanding of the impact that race, class, culture, sexual orientation, and gender exert on learning and teaching. To support this focus on diversity, students experience a range of field placements.

A sampling of courses offered by the school includes:

Art for the Elementary Teacher
Educational Psychology and Adolescent Development
The Nature of Science and Science Education
Theory and Practice of Experiential Education
Physical Education and Health — Elementary School

For more information about the above classes, or others that are offered through the School of Education, please refer to the course description section found in the university catalog.

Applying to the School of Education
Students who have completed a bachelor's degree may apply for admission directly to the School of Education. All other students must be admitted to another college or school before applying for a CU-Boulder teacher licensure program. For more information, see the School of Education web site.
