Standards for Guaranteed Admission
In order to enter the College of Music, a student must pass an audition and have a minimum grade point average of 2.00. Music Education majors must have a minimum grade point average of 2.75. Transfer is not guaranteed if the student has deficiencies in the Minimum Academic Preparation Standards.
Degrees Offered
The College of Music offers three undergraduate degrees:
- Bachelor of Music (BM)
- Bachelor of Music Education (BME)
- Bachelor of Arts in Music (BA)
A BME and BA have liberal arts requirements, which approximate those of the College of Arts and Sciences. In addition, a full year of Music Theory and Ear Training, Music History, Piano Class, Voice Class, private applied instruction, and a performance ensemble are recommended for students interested in any of the three degrees. Students enter at an applied level determined by the faculty in their performance area.
Degree Graduation Requirements
The Bachelor of Music degree is a four-year professional curriculum with concentrations offered in composition, jazz studies, musicology, performance and voice theatre. A minimum of 120 semester hours with an overall grade point average of 2.0 is required for the degree.
The Bachelor of Music Education degree is a four-year professional program that prepares students to teach music in elementary and secondary schools while qualifying them for a K-12 Colorado music teaching license. BME students choose one of four basic curricula or emphases: choral, instrumental, choral-general, or instrumental-general. A minimum of 126 semester hours with an overall grade point average of 2.75 must be earned with no grade lower than a "C-".
The Bachelor of Arts degree in Music offers a broad education in music within a liberal arts context. BA students are required to complete 120 semester hours with an overall grade point of 2.00. Of these hours, 68 must be in non-music courses and 30 must be at the upper-division level.
Music majors may not transfer in credit for MUS 100, MUS 105, MUS 120, MUS 125, MUS 126 or MUS 161.
