The Mourner
In February 2022, Russia began to invade Ukraine. During this time, I felt the increase in tension between Russia, Ukraine and the United States of America. As I began researching more about the effects of war, I was struck with awe and sadness. I made this art piece to symbolize how tragic and horrifying the loss of life in Ukraine was. I modeled this collage after an image of a mother mourning her recently deceased son, a Ukrainian soldier. I wanted to make this piece to show how the loss of life to war is something no one should go through and how I personally felt. The defeated slouch of the mourning mother is a powerful image because it represents how I feel. The weight of modern life is heavy for not only me but many other people included. The hyper-awareness of everything happening in the world is hard for me to process, which is represented in my use of torn news articles and advertisements. This art piece was on display from April to September 2022 in the Museum of Contemporary Arts Denver in their ‘Hazard and Order’ art show. Student Arts Program official selection 2023. About the Artist
Kirabo Michael Kaddu-Kibuuka was born on August 11, 2004, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He moved to Houston, Texas, when he was little and grew up there before moving to Superior, Colorado, when he was 12. In 6th grade, he discovered his talent and enjoyment of making videos. From making videos, he then ventured into making art digitally. Since he started making art, he has shown multiple artworks in museums and schools. He has happily led a multitude of art groups.
