Certificate in Music Theory

Our students are well-prepared for careers in teaching or work in music-related media and technology.

The undergraduate certificate in music theory allows students to explore in-depth analyses of musical works and apply their learnings in performance. The certificate provides interested students with opportunities to take more varied upper-level courses. Open to qualified music majors, the program culminates in an independent study under a faculty member.

Academic Plan & Requirements

Students must earn a B+ or higher in first-year and sophomore music theory and aural skills classes to qualify for this certificate. Applications for this program take place either sophomore or junior year. Students must submit a statement of purpose to the music theory chair. 

The curriculum consists of 18 credit hours, with most students taking between one to two required courses per semester.
