Abstract: Dr. Charles Hoke will give a talk beginning with a brief overview of his background, teaching experience, research activities, and educational leadership experience. This will be followed by a mock lecture focusing on the fundamentals of rocket propulsion taken from his Applied Thermodynamics and Propulsion course. The background material will discuss his efforts as the head of learning and teaching for the School of Engineering and Technology at the University of New South Wales, Canberra, and his current educational research on framing effects in higher education done while he was the visiting professor for the Department of Aeronautics at the U.S. Air Force Academy. In addition, he will outline his redevelopment of the capstone aeronautical engineering course and his future plans to develop a competency-based computing curriculum for the school of engineering. The mock lecture will highlight his teaching style in a typical undergraduate lecture setting.
Bio: Dr. Charles Hoke is a Senior Lecturer for the School of Engineering and Technology at the University of New South Wales, Canberra and the Australian Defence Force Academy. As a member of the UNSW Education Focussed cohort, Dr. Hoke has led the redesign of the Aeronautical Engineering Capstone Design Course and led the School's Teaching Quality program. His PhD investigated on the flapping-wing energy extraction potential of actively morphing foils, and his current research focuses on experimental and computational investigations of hypersonic fluid-thermal-structural interactions. Last year, he was the Distinguished Visiting Professor for the Department of Aeronautics at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Prior to his tenure at UNSW, Dr. Hoke worked in industry and served in the U.S. Air Force. In his spare time, he is an instrument-rated pilot and is an avid mountain biker, skier, and runner.
