The Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM), challenges teams of students to clarify, analyze, and propose solutions to open-ended problems. The contest attracts diverse students and faculty advisors from over 500 institutions around the world. In February of 2008, the Department of Applied Mathematics had students on two teams receive "Meritorious" and three teams receive "Honorable Mention" for their work. Over 1540 teams entered the competition, working on three different problems. (Further information on Applied Mathematics teams at the February 2008 MCM.)
