The economic meltdown, as seen from Europe

A European Union Parliamentarian who is also an authority on economic policy will discuss the global financial crisis on the University of Colorado campus on March 16.

John Purvis, a longtime European Parliamentarian and vice chairman of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (since 2002), will speak on the global financial crisis, how it is unfolding in the EU and what Parliament is doing to address the turmoil.

The talk, titled “Global Turmoil: The Transatlantic Dimension,” is hosted by the Colorado European Union Center of Excellence and will take place March 16 from 1:45 p.m. to 3 p.m. in room 229 of the Atlas Center on campus.

Purvis has also done significant work on Middle East affairs, and industry and technology. He is prepared to answer questions on a wide range of political, social, geo-political and European issues. The event is designed for academic,  business and policy audiences.

Those with little knowledge of the European Union may join CEUCE for a presentation on the broad historical development of the European Union and its main governing institutions (prior to Mr. Purvis’ lecture), from 1 p.m. to 1:35 p.m. The presentation will help contextualize the European Parliament within the spectrum of EU institutions.

The Colorado European Union Center for Excellence advances a “transformational” initiative in Flagship 2030, CU’s strategic plan, university officials have said. A key goal of Flagship 2030 is “building a global crossroads,” in which leading thinkers of the world visit, work and study at CU.

Last year, Joseph Jupille, CU associate professor of political science, was awarded a three-year grant worth 300,000 Euro (about $375,000 at today’s exchange rates) to establish the Colorado European Union Center of Excellence, which will study and teach the interactions between the EU and the United States.
