Karl LindenDear CEAE Colleagues, Alumni and Friends,

It’s nearly a year since I began my role as the chair of CU Boulder’s Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering.

This academic year we again have a vibrant community within civil, environmental and architectural engineering including 607 undergraduates, 94 master’s students and 106 PhD students. Of these almost 50 percent identify as women and almost 17 percent of our undergraduates are first-generation college students.  In fiscal year 2023, our research funding hit new heights, securing 87 awards totaling  $26.7 million — placing us among the top three departments in the entire university.

Recognized by the U.S. News and World Report as the #10 Best Public Civil Engineering Graduate Program and the #9 Best Environmental Engineering Graduate Program among public institutions, our thriving research labs and incredible faculty include 11 NSF CAREER awardees and four recent Fulbright awardees.

We also secured the #15 spot in the USN&WR’s Best School rankings for for undergraduate programs in civil engineering and are ranked #8 for environmental engineering among public institutions for 2024.

With a team of committed faculty and staff, firmly rooted in their roles, and a cohort of inspiring students, we are thriving and excited about our future.

As chair, I aspire to cultivate a culture where everyone feels valued as an integral part of the department. We have a vibrant DEI team, host regular breakfast gatherings across various labs and programs, build community with social gatherings at interesting locations like the rooftop of the Museum of Boulder, local breweries, and trendy Boulder venues, and have inaugurated a Faculty Stories seminar series, where our faculty share their journey into their engineering career with our community.

As the fall semester winds down, I’m thrilled to share the latest updates and accomplishments from our department in the stories below, and I encourage you to check out our new video highlighting our architectural engineering program. If you’re seeking to enhance your credentials without relocating, explore articles on our Water Engineering Management Professional Master’s program and our Professional Graduate Architectural Lighting Certificate program, both providing remote learning opportunities.

Wishing you a restful and happy holiday season.
