Required Assessments
The Developmental Assessment of Young Children-Second Edition (DAYC-2) is a norm-referenced measure of early childhood development for children from birth through age 5 years 11 months. The DAYC-2 measures abilities in five developmental domains: cognition, communication (separately measuring expressive and receptive language), social emotional, physical (separately measuring gross and fine motor), and adaptive behavior. In addition to age equivalent scores, both standard scores and percentile ranks are provided. Questions will be framed so that language skills can be demonstrated by the child in either spoken or sign language. This assessment is typically completed by a clinician with the help of a parent as needed for items not observed within the assessment or therapy setting.
The MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories are standardized, norm-referenced assessments completed by parents/caregivers. The inventories provide percentile ranks as well as age-equivalent scores. The appropriate inventory -- Words and Gestures, Words and Sentences, or Level 3 is selected based on the child’s chronological age. All three inventories assess a child’s expressive vocabulary skills. Depending on the inventory, additional language skills are measured including vocabulary comprehension, communicative and symbolic gestures, grammar, and cognitive-linguistic abilities. As an in-depth measure of vocabulary skill, this instrument nicely complements the DAYC-2 which assesses more general language abilities.
