CIRTL Massive Open Online Courses

  • Course 1: An Introduction to Evidence-Based Undergraduate STEM Teaching is an open, online course designed to provide future STEM faculty, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows with an introduction to effective teaching strategies and the research that supports them.  The goal of the eight-week course is to equip the next generation of STEM faculty to be effective teachers, thus improving the learning experience for the thousands of students they will teach.
  • Course 2: Advancing Learning through Evidence-Based STEM Teaching
         will provide graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) who are planning college and university faculty careers with an introduction to “teaching as research”—the deliberate, systematic, and reflective use of research methods to develop and implement teaching practices that advance the learning experiences and outcomes of both students and teachers. Participants will learn about effective teaching strategies and the research that supports them, and they will learn how to collect, analyze, and act upon their own evidence of student learning.

    • Addressing Issues of Gender and STEM Education
      • This learning community is for anyone interested in reading journal articles and discussing issues of gender and STEM education. Topics, online meetings, and other logistic issues will be addressed when enough members indicate an interest in this learning community.
    • Academic Careers & Job Postings
      • CIRTL members are encouraged to use this learning community to share staff, faculty or post-graduate opportunities that include a focus on teaching and learning in STEM. If you have a job opening to share, post it to this community as a new discussion topic.
    • Teaching & Learning Professional Development Opportunities Beyond CIRTL
      • CIRTL member universities and partner organizations offer a broad range of professional development opportunities beyond official CIRTL Network programming. This learning community is intended as a hub to share these opportunities with a broader audience.
    • Equity in STEM for All Genders Community of Practice
      • Literacy and advocacy that empower students to engage in long-term positive change is important for the progress of gender equity in STEM. This Community of Practice (CoP) will engage participants asynchronously as well as synchronously in an exploration of the ways that gender bias impacts STEM training and careers. The primary focus of the CoP will be on analysis and dissemination of strategies to recognize bias, intervene, and advocate for equity.

      • Discuss Syllabi, Assignments, or Lesson Plans
