Micaela is a Ph.D. student in the History Department at the University of Colorado Boulder. Her interests include North American borderlands, environmental history, memory, and ethnohistory. Micaela’s work focuses on constructions of race, gender, kinship, nationality, and other categories of social belonging and exclusion in the North American West. Her dissertation will examine captivity in the upper Rio Grande basin during the Spanish-colonial, Mexican, and U.S. territorial periods. She is dedicated to recovering perspectives that are underrepresented in existing historical narratives and for which primary source material is not abundant. Micaela’s current project is an article-length piece, probing the politics of memory and erasure at Rocky Flats, a plutonium production facility turned national wildlife refuge.
