"One Fine Day" video, created by Group Project Filmmaking Collective and performed by Margaret Ozaki Graves

Project Description

Over time, it has become more and more uncomfortable to portray caricatures of our own Japanese American ethnic heritage. Using the famous aria from Madama Butterfly, "One Fine Day" shows the strength and value of Asian and Asian American women beyond that of the established stereotypes. Through provocative means (content/trigger warning: yellowface), we hope to draw attention to the dangers wrapped up in the portrayal of Asian women through stereotypical and fetishizing tropes. One in five AAPI women experience contact sexual violence and unwanted non-contact sexual experiences.
