ChBE alumna Jia Wei Chew has received Singapore’s highest accolade for youth, the 2015 Singapore Youth Award (SYA).

According to the SYA website, “SYA recognizes the excellence of young Singaporeans everywhere: the young people who have vision, a ‘can-do’ attitude towards challenges, a ‘never-say-die’ spirit in the face of adversity, the courage to ‘"walk the talk’, and the passion to ‘serve by doing’. These are the young men and women whose stellar achievements and selfless spirit have helped to make a better world for all.”

In her video interview, Chew states, “In this fast-changing world, there are two aspects that you can fully control. One is perseverance and the other is positivity.” She embraces both in her cutting-edge research and numerous volunteer activities.

Chew received her Ph.D. under the guidance of Professor Christine Hrenya in 2011. Her dissertation on polydispersity in fluidized bed systems earned her the prestigious 2013 AIChE George Klinzing Best Ph.D. Thesis in Particle Technology.

Now an Assistant Professor at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, Chew specializes in fluidized bed and membrane technologies.
