A highlight of CMDI in D.C. is a guaranteed internship work experience that’s tailored to your strengths and career aspirations. Once students are accepted into the program, we'll have you work with our partner - the Washington Media Institute. 

After speaking with you about your interests and career aspirations, you’ll be placed at an organization that will let you explore and build a network in a field like journalism, communications, analytics, advertising, media production, public relations or politics. The connections and work experience you’ll develop will provide invaluable career preparation.

Recent internships include:

Advertising and Public Relations
  • 720 Strategies: Interns work on a number of client projects and duties include supporting research, strategy, client management and creating press releases. 
  • National Gallery and the Smithsonian: Students with an interest in the arts have had the opportunity to work in arts public relations and communication, where the work ranges from supporting specific exhibits to larger institutional projects. 
  • The Pentagon: Interns typically work for the ROTC program on a range of issues. One recent student was selected to work personally with Secretary of Defense James Mattis. 
  • Recent students have interned at organizations including the National Resources Defense Council, So Others Might Eat, the National Network to End Domestic Violence, the World Wildlife Foundation, and the Brookings Institution.
  • The Hill: For those interested in politics, there is no purer venue to pursue political journalism.
  • DC Witness: For journalists interested in social justice, this internship puts them inside courtrooms as part of an innovative new approach to criminal justice reporting.
  • Bethesda Magazine: For those interested in magazine and more style writing this is an exceptional opportunity.
  • CNN, WJLA (local ABC affiliate), and ABC News: These focus on traditional broadcast news.
  • Voice of America: This news outlet has one of the best documentary production units in the city. Several students have interned here and loved it and have developed strong professional skills.
  • Street Sense: This media outlet takes a pioneering approach to covering the homeless. Interns do very hands-on reporting on this important topic. 
  • Interns have worked in public relations for professional sports teams in Washington, D.C., including DC United.
  • Sports journalism students have worked for Sirius XM and BetQL, among others, and have frequently converted these internships into permanent jobs.
  • Political communication internships are available in both the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as with the Republican National Committee and the Democratic National Committee.
