Students, their families, friends and CMCI faculty gathered last week to celebrate graduating. At CMCI's Recognition Ceremony May 12, 2023, nearly 700 students crossed the stage, accepted their diplomas and became alumni. In total, more than 800 bachelors, master’s and doctoral students completed their degrees.

Fourth-year student Shawn Mitchell was planning to study physics until a gap year changed the course of his collegiate experience. This month, Mitchell is ready to graduate and pursue his passion for immersive media with the distinction of being the Department of Critical Media Practice’s William W. White Outstanding Senior.

CMCI Now: Sharing the Love

Meet Denver's Most Remarkable Woman, CMCI student Angel Mollel. After moving from a male-dominated village in Tanzania to the U.S. in 2012, Mollel launched the foundation 1 Love to improve the livelihood of Maasai people and empower women and girls to pursue their dreams. Now a sophomore studying media production, she uses visual storytelling to share her mission and culture.

After leaving her hometown of Glenwood Springs to pursue her education in Boulder, senior Cera Kocher quickly realized that, while it takes courage to try something new, there’s power in the ability to feel comfortable as a beginner. After college, she’ll continue to fuel her entrepreneurial spirit by joining Boulder Media House, a production company launched by fellow CMCI and CU Boulder alumni. With majors in Media Production and Strategic Communication, as well as a minor in Creative Technology and Design, Kocher is the Department of Critical Media Practices’ William W. White Outstanding Senior.

CMCI Now: Back From the Past

Media Production students cluster around a table in CU Boulder’s Museum of Natural History as Emily Braker, the museum’s collections manager, reveals their subjects: a snake in a jar, taxidermied birds, a series of skulls and an array of other specimens dating back to the early 1900s. Their task? Take advantage of 2020 technology to reanimate the objects for an assignment in their Introduction to Extended Realities course.
