Last year Trent Beckley (Fin’11) was a member of CU’s basketball team that made it to the NIT Final 4. He works for Lijit Networks, a start-up firm in Boulder specializing in advertising. He writes that more than half of the company’s employees are CU alums. Trent says the company is continually hiring and wants to share job opportunities with alums across the country.

While working on the CU Science Update video series, Jenna Browder (Jour’11) of Gunnison, Colo., Eric Duggan (Jour, PolSci’11) of Arvada, Colo., Sabina Hadzic (Jour’11) of Lakewood, Colo., Amanda Yourick (Jour’11) of Castle Rock, Colo., and CU senior Greg O’Brien won a Heartland Emmy award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The winning episode, Pluto — The Un-Planet, was part of their advanced video editing course and featured the Space Dust Counter, an instrument made by CU students that is aboard NASA’s New Horizons mission to Pluto.

Because of his strong commitment to the engineering community, David Eason (MechEngr’11) received the Colorado Engineering Council Silver Medal award, the council’s highest honor at the university level. He also received CU’s mechanical engineering department’s “Outstanding M.E. Senior for Research” award at his graduation in May. He also earned a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, which has allowed him to pursue studies at Stanford University.

For three nights in July, artist Adam Milner (Art, Jour’11) took his living arrangement to a new level. His exhibition, “Another Room,” featured his entire bedroom in the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art where he talked with visitors and used video, photography, performance and drawing to document his interactions and routines. The exhibition was part of an ongoing series to address the key influences that shape people’s actions and decisions. Adam lives in Boulder.

The Center for Tax and Budget Accountability named Amanda Kass (MGeog’11) research and policy specialist for pensions and local government where she heads the center’s Illinois Retirement Security Initiative. The Chicago-based nonprofit organization aims to ensure that tax, spending and economic policies are fair for everyone. While at CU, Amanda’s master’s thesis focused on post-earthquake reconstruction efforts in Haiti, underscoring the importance of fiscal policies in ensuring the public sector has the capacity to deliver services.

College was much more than academics for Anita Lowe (IntPhys’11). While pursuing her degree, she taught English to middle school students in China, held a medical internship in Costa Rica, volunteered with earthquake disaster relief in Peru and studied in Italy. The Denver resident plans to become a physician and possibly work for Doctors Without Borders, an organization that works to bring quality medical care to people in need throughout the world.

Certified trainer Lauren Pierpoint (IntPhys, Math’09, MS’11) joined Boulder’s Fitness for Living as a boot camp trainer. She has taught such classes as cycling, sport conditioning and body sculpting. She lives in Broomfield, Colo.

Overcoming hurdles is second nature for Sarah Deacon (MCDBio’11). She was the first to graduate in her family with a college degree, a feat especially monumental because she dropped out of high school and spent some time homeless. Her next goal is to go to medical school. “Now I am officially qualified to do what I know I am capable of,” she told the Colorado Daily.

After serving on CU’s Program Council Justin Greenstein (Jour’11) and student Eric Kean had the idea to start their own concert promotion company called Amplitude Entertainment. They assist student groups and campus organizations across the country in hosting cheap shows. Their services are free of charge to campus groups, and the duo takes a percentage of the concert’s ticket sales or advertising. Justin told the Colorado Daily that they got the business idea after they were unable to throw a huge spring concert at CU due to lack of funds.

After working with Interactive Theater, Anthony Hull (PolSci’11) is making a documentary on a school in Harlem with creative partner Gregory Callan (PolSci’12). Anthony believes that education is one of the most important topics in our country, and in underrepresented communities, great education needs to be available. Earlier this spring he served as a judge in the CU Idol, a campus singing contest sponsored by The Herd.

A two-week trip to Nicaragua inspired Michael Pearl (Mktg’11) to start an organic, fair-trade coffee buying business to help grow the industry and boost the local economy. “Basically, I wanted to cut out the middle man,” he told the Boulder Camera. He lives in Boulder.

After graduating a semester early Jamie Roberts (Jour’11) moved to Quepos, Costa Rica, to become vice president of MidWorld Costa Rica, an adventure park nestled the country’s tropical jungle. She oversees the park, sometimes even working as a photographer on the ziplines or guiding tours. In her spare time she likes to travel to see the rest of the country with her camera. “I believe in taking full advantage of everything Costa Rica has to offer, and it’s not uncommon to find me doing some crazy activity, like bungee jumping or waterfall rappelling,” she writes. One of her photos appeared in the June Coloradan in the “Leafing through summer” feature.

Before graduating Lauren Bader (IntlAf’11) wrote her senior thesis about sport and development in Africa titled “Football and Community Building in Africa.” Since graduating Lauren has been interning with the CTC TEN foundation in Khayalitsha, South Africa. The foundation runs sport and education programs at a soccer field.

“We’re getting ready for CU vs. CSU over here in Afghanistan this week,” Alex Banks (PolSci’11) wrote in August. Alex is a second lieutenant located in the northern Helmend Province of Afghanistan along with two other Buffs. One of Alex’s classmates, T.J. Perna (EnvSt’10), is serving in the south with a different unit. The four Marines participated in the NROTC program while they were in Boulder.

Denver Human Services announced Jeffrey Holliday (MBA’11) as the agency’s deputy manager of protection and prevention services. Jeffrey has more than 20 years of experience in the realm of child welfare in the public and private sectors. He oversees Denver’s child protective services, foster care services, child abuse hotline, Family Crisis Center, youth services and community programs.

Boulder resident Courtney Harkins (Engl’11) appeared in the Nov. 17 issue of the Daily Camera celebrating the 50th anniversary of Eldora Ski Resort. “It’s pretty incredible that there is a ski resort here and that everything is so close and so easy,” Courtney told the Camera. “And it gives me an excuse to wear as much retro gear as I can this year.”
