Notes from the Class of 2012

As executive director and founder of the Mountain Flower Dairy, an urban goat dairy, in Boulder, Taber Ward(Law’12) oversees the organization’s daily operations, employee supervision, herd health, education programs and more. Mountain Flower aims to generate awareness of sustainable agriculture among Boulder citizens.

With his CU entrepreneurial training and experience with the Deming Center Venture Fund, a capital investment account operated by CU-Boulder graduate students, Matt Reisman (MBA, MEnvSt) launched Rachio, a Denver-based startup firm focused on water conservation through smart irrigation systems. Matt lives in Superior, Colo.

Ball Corp.’s Jamie Arnold (MEngrMgmt) was honored in March at the Women in Manufacturing Science, Technology, Engineering and Production Awards in Washington, D.C. The STEP Awards honor women who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in their careers and represent all levels of the manufacturing industry.

In February Andrew Riley (Mgmt) closed a 40,000-square-foot deal for Kite Pharmaceutical. He is a broker at the real estate group CBRE in Beverly Hills. He bases his practice on cultivating long-term relationships with clients and local owners.

Professional golfer Emily Talley (Comm) played on the LPGA’s Symetra Tour this year. She and her boyfriend, CU skier Andreas Hoye (Acct, Fin’14), planned to move to Norway during the offseason.

Actress Caroline Barry (Thtr) was the star of 10 Days in a Madhouse, a 2015 biopic about 19th-century journalist Nellie Bly, who feigned mental illness to report on the happenings within a women’s insane asylum. At CU Caroline participated in the Colorado Shakespeare Festival Touring Show and performed for thousands of children and teenagers statewide. After shows she held workshops that taught the audiences about the complexities of bullying and how to deal with it in their own lives. Caroline says being selfless and helping others is the secret to happiness.

The national law firm Arnstein & Lehr LLP welcomed Joseph L. Hoolihan (PolSci) to its Chicago office as an associate in the litigation practice group. Before joining the firm, Joseph was a judicial extern with the Honorable Marvin Aspen of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. He also worked as a clerk at a Chicago law firm and served as a member of Northwestern’s Bartlit Center Trial Team.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offered Chelsea Raubenheimer (Span) a grant to travel to Brazil for an English teaching assistantship. Fulbright grants are selected on the basis of academic and professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential. Chelsea is one of more than 1,900 U.S. citizens who will travel abroad through the Fulbright U.S. student program during the 2015- 16 academic year.

Zach Siegel (PolSci; Law’15) joined the real estate department in the Denver law firm Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck and will work on large-scale, mixed-use development projects. He has experience in negotiations and drafting contracts, which includes navigating city government contracts, concessions agreements and a variety of leasing requirements.

Coloradan associate editor Christie Sounart (Jour) married Levi Henry (Math) last October in Littleton, Colo. The couple celebrated with a trip to Hawaii. They live in Denver.

In August 2015, Pamela Dadaos (Soc) joined the CU-Boulder Alumni Association as program manager for athletics and regional outreach. Prior to joining the Alumni Association, she spent a year with the CU Buff Club and three years working for Kroenke Sports & Entertainment. While attending CU, she worked for the Recreation Center and the City of Boulder, while also serving as an intern for CU Athletics and as a student ambassador. A native of Healdsburg, Calif., Pamela now resides in Denver where she spends her free time rooting on the San Francisco Giants and skiing.

Jack Vertovec (Anth) moved to Miami in August 2015 to pursue a PhD in the Department of Global and Sociocultural Studies at Florida International University. He is examining the growth of self-employment in Cuba and is particularly interested in the informal economy existing alongside this emergent economic sector. Jack’s investigation uses sociological and anthropological methods to understand how post-Soviet market reformations, specifically the cuentapropia (private enterprise) system, are impacting contemporary Cuban society. Jack hopes to find a tenure-track position at a tier-1 research university once he finishes his PhD.

Former Buffaloes starting fullback Evan Harrington (Soc) became the youngest head coach of American football in Europe at age 27 and this year will lead Switzerland’s Winterthur Warriors. Evan also works in player development and scouts both American and European football players. He plans to host football camps throughout Europe. “There is rarely a European city I visit where I do not run into a CU Boulder alum,” he writes.

Flautist Hannah Darroch (MMus) was one of this year’s recipients of the Arts Excellence Award given by the Wellington Committee of the Dame Malvina Major Foundation in New Zealand and will receive prize money for her further studies. Hannah has been involved in music education, community outreach and arts administration in the Wellington region. She will be studying at McGill University in Montreal in the Doctor of Music program majoring in flute performance.

Brendan Mullins (Arch) is helping international design firm Stantec launch its second virtual reality research initiative. Brendan, who will serve as VR research lead, has a blended background in architectural design and digital media with design experience in gaming and buildings. He lives in San Francisco.

Marni Spott (Ger, IntlAf; MGer’12), previously Herd program manager at the CU Boulder Alumni Association, is now pursuing a career in culinary arts. She will be earning a dual master’s degree in culinary arts and international business at the Culinary Arts Academy in Lucerne, Switzerland. Marni hopes to apply her new skills to an agri-tourism business.

Former CU golfer Emily Talley (Comm) and former CU cross country skier Andreas Høye (Acct, Fin’14) were engaged in August on top of Mt. Tallac at Lake Tahoe in California. Emily and Andreas live in Oslo, Norway, Andreas’ hometown.

Joe Mekulski (Econ) was hired as the newest broker at the Baltimore office of KLNB, a commercial real estate brokerage and services firm. He will assist with tenant and landlord representation activities in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., metropolitan areas.

After graduating from CU, Sean Smith (Comm) moved to Singapore, where he teaches fifth grade at Singapore American School. He writes that he’ll start a master’s degree program in leadership for international educators in November 2017. In Singapore, he spends his time with his fiancée, Kamilah, and friends, and travels around Southeast Asia when he can. He plans to stay in Singapore for the long term, but will continue to visit Boulder, as it’s near and dear to his heart.

RMH Group engineer Matt Guerin (ArchEngr) passed his professional engineer exam in mechanical engineering. He has five years of experience in Colorado designing mechanical systems for facilities, plants and laboratories.
