Background

Starting January 25, 2023, the National Institute of Health (NIH) began requiring that all award proposals contain a plan for data management and sharing. This is to ensure that the results of NIH-funded research are more readily available. Due to the increase in making the data more accessible, the NIH will allow grant budgets to include expenses for data management and sharing. In addition, other sponsors have already been or will soon allow and/or require data sharing.

Result

NIH provided a list of allowable costs related to data management and sharing which include curating data, developing supporting documentation, de-identifying data and more. CU Boulder’s central research offices (OCG and RFS) identified a need for a new account code to allocate and track these expenditures going forward. Therefore, account code 500217 (entitled “Data Sharing”) was modified to capture data management and sharing expenses. Please use this account code when posting those types of expenses going forward.
