CU Boulder announced today the launch of its online master of science in computer science degree program. The program is hosted on Coursera, a leading online learning platform, and directed at working professionals and others who seek career advancement in areas including software and systems engineering, artificial intelligence and web development.

The 30-credit-hour master’s degree program is included in the university's accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission and provides opportunities for students to combine conceptual knowledge with technical experience across both broad computer science courses and a wide range of electives. Courses for this program start in August 2023.

Students will have the flexibility to explore interdisciplinary electives in electrical engineering, engineering management or data science through courses from CU Boulder’s other degrees on Coursera, which include the master’s in data science, master’s in electrical engineering and master’s in engineering management

“We are excited to offer a computer science MS degree that uses CU Boulder’s unique and successful performance-based admissions approach on Coursera,” said Bobby Schnabel, computer science department external chair and professor. “This degree will make the modern, high-quality instruction that we provide to residential students available to a global audience.”

Admission to the program is based on the performance in three preliminary courses, not an applicant’s academic history. A bachelor degree is not required. The classes will be taught in six eight-week sessions per year and by CU Boulder’s expert faculty, who have research and industry expertise. Weekly office hours with course facilitators will provide academic support and the opportunity to ask questions about the material of the program.

“CU Boulder values its partnership with Coursera, which allows us to leverage our world-class faculty into online master’s degree programs that serve students from around the world,” said Robert McDonald, senior vice provost of online education. “This addition of the online master’s in computer science reflects our commitment to putting students first while leveraging the best of our world-class faculty.”

Total tuition for the program is $15,750, with a pay-as-you-go payment model that charges for only the classes in which students are enrolled. Students are allowed a total of eight years to complete this master’s degree.
