Served as dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science at CU Boulder from July 2002 until January 2017.

On the CU Boulder faculty since 1982, including as chair of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering for 10 years, with demonstrated excellence in research, teaching and service.

While dean, college research grants increased from $38 million to $83 million per year, leading to improvements in the college’s research quality and output and helping to elevate four departments to the National Research Council’s top 15.

Heightened the quality of undergraduate and graduate education, creating a 75 percent enrollment increase for both programs during his time as dean.

Promoted diversity through a continued emphasis on appointing faculty and staff focused on inclusive excellence and implemented student resources such as the BOLD Center, GoldShirt Program, Idea Forge, and Earn-Learn and Discovery Learning apprenticeship programs.
