2024 Speaker

Kara Fox is an award-winning journalist and photographer whose work explores the intersection of geopolitics, gender, conflict and climate across the globe. As a 2023–24 Ted Scripps Fellow in environmental journalism, she is researching the myriad ways in which climate change—and extractive industries connected to it—pose unique threats to women and girls. She is concurrently laying the foundation for a long-term project on the burgeoning world of deep-sea mining. Since 2016, Fox has worked as a digital producer at CNN International, crafting features from across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, ranging from alternative youth movements in Russia, the persecution of LGBTQ+ people in Turkey and the plight of Rwandan dissidents. Her work has been cited in Congress and in the Irish parliament. Before that, she worked as a visual journalist, documenting daily life in the isolated kingdom of Bhutan and political movements in Myanmar, Cambodia, Haiti and the U.K. Fox began her career in New York, where she worked as a photo editor at National Geographic Adventure magazine and the World Picture Network.
