Service Overview

Kahoot! is a digital tool that engages learners through interactive presentations and games.

Testing Parameters

In March 2022, the Digital Accessibility Office’s Assessment and Usability Team conducted an accessibility test of the Kahoot! platform. We acknowledge that our test of this platform was very directed and may not have reviewed every use case. We used a game pre-created by our CU library colleagues using the free version that included multiple choice question types.

Kahoot! Accessibility Status

The Digital Accessibility Office has found the Kahoot! platform to be relatively accessible to individuals who utilize assistive technologies (AT) and alternative forms of access when using untimed quizzes. The timer disrupted screen reader output, and focus was pulled to the timer instead of the question. Additionally, in between question-answering sessions, the next question is presented visually before being open to answering. However, the question previews are timed, and individuals using screen readers cannot hear the question before the page loads with the different answer options.

Other issues were present that created a challenge for individuals using assistive technology. A visual indicator (graphic) is provided for the correct answer when the answers are shown. Still, the graphic is not available to the screen readers, which keeps screen reader users from knowing which answer was correct. Additionally, there were combination/list boxes that required complex (nonstandard) interactions and focus handling issues that provided navigation challenges to users using desktop and mobile browser versions.

Recommendations

We recommend not using timed quizzes because of the complications presented when a timer is implemented.

When providing a Kahoot! quiz, ensure you actively facilitate the quizzing by:

  • Announcing when a question has been presented.
  • Explaining the answer type (multiple choice, short answer, etc.) and answer options, if applicable.
  • Announcing when a quiz has ended.

Additional Information

This summary reflects the state of the platform as of March 18th, 2022. Please note that some information may have changed since this platform was last tested.

The findings presented in this summary are accurate in the context of the IT environment and configuration at the time of testing at CU Boulder. They may not be accurate in other environments and with different versions of the application.
