The Assistive Center for Direct Control (ACDC) provides patients with the ability to control different parts of a basic hospital room (e.g. TV, bed, fan, etc.) through an Android device. ACDC gives the patient more control to complete simple tasks without relying on a nurse or caretaker.
Medical patients with low physical mobility are often unable to perform everyday tasks which an able bodied patient can complete on their own. This includes controlling their surroundings such as the TV, fan, bed, and lamp. These tasks are currently handled by the nursing staff, creating additional work and overloading nurses. In addition, not being able to control your basic surroundings can be frustrating and stressful to the patient, sometimes hindering their recovery. By giving direct control back to the patient, ACDC not only reduces the workload on the nursing staff, it can also improve outlooks by restoring a sense of independence and control in patients.
