An illustration of the team's bicycle power meter

The objective of our project is to create a cost-effective, easy-to-use bicycle power meter. The power meter will be able to measure and record the power that a user outputs while riding a bicycle using a strain gauge located on the crank arm of the bike in conjunction with a gyroscope. The device will also utilize a barometer to collect elevation data. The corresponding application will analyze this data providing valuable feedback for the user. The feedback will include information about the user instantaneous power, average power, cadence, elevation data, and will utilize graphs describing the users power output. Bluetooth will be the communication method between the power meter and application. The application will include features that can analyze and display information related to the sensor data. This will be realized through an Android application available to Android devices that are Bluetooth 2.0 compatible. It will relay to the user various data such as generated power, incline, and time interval of measurement.

Measuring power output while riding a bike can significantly enhance rider workout by providing precise data on his/her performance. Specifically, one way to greatly improve cycling performance is for a cyclist to achieve higher power output for longer periods of time. A rider can track day-to-day performance, or design workouts based on power output levels. Trainers can use data acquired from the power meter to customize workouts for their clients to maximize their performance. The capability to monitor power output during competition allows for a cyclist to adjust their effort in order to best use their energy. Our product will solve the problem that these devices are only accessible to professional riders due to the high cost. Our product will be much more affordable making it available to everyone!
