With the increased need for agile technology that can access and monitor environments beyond human reach, we have created the Bumble Bot: an insect inspired self-sustaining robot designed for data acquisition for varying outdoor applications. Bumble Bot integrates a buildable sensor platform wherein the user can adapt the bot for their specific needs. This modular platform is already equipped with a camera capable of image capture and machine vision. Bumble bot supports two modes of operation. The autonomous mode allows the bot to navigate novel environments independently for an extended period of time while collecting the required user data. To minimize human intervention, Bumble Bot will seek out the sun to charge its battery which is supported by light sensors as well as solar charging circuit. The remote operation mode allows the user to have direct control over the entire platform. Bumble Bot will be ideal for applications such as environmental monitoring, space exploration, as well as search and rescue.
