Have you ever tried to hear someone speak to you at a loud concert? It likely resulted in a lot of screaming but barely any communication. Remote sensing instruments face a similar issue, trying to pick up a whisper of a signal in a noisy environment. These sensors allow us to quickly measure natural parameters from afar, such as soil moisture, which is used in many fields, such as agriculture, hydrology, and climate science. As wireless communication has become more and more widespread, it is increasingly important to develop sensors that can operate in noisy environments. Our project is to construct and test a novel technique of radiometer architecture which can allow radio frequency (RF) measurements to be made in noisy bands with far greater precision than conventional techniques, paving the way for further developments in radio frequency analysis in our noisy world.
