SafeGuard is an automated traffic controller that guarantees safety and swiftness for emergency first responders at intersections by granting right of way with a preemptive green light. A neural network algorithm can detect when a siren is present near an upcoming intersection and automatically grant right of way to a first responder with a green light. The automation of this system reduces driver input and, therefore, stress. SafeGuard differs from current infrared preemption systems by implementing long range RF and GPS technologies to avoid problems with line of sight and ensures deterministic operation.
