Green Chemistry Certificate Fellowship

CU Boulder students can apply for a fellowship for an online green chemistry certificate program offered by the University of Washington (UW). This program is a CU Green Labs, CHEMunity and (B)Chem Club partnership. It has been made possible over the years by funding from the CU Boulder Chemistry Department, Environmental Health and Safety, Chemical and Biological Engineering, RASEI, the Graduate School, and Sustainable CU. Professionals in various fields often take the UW certificate program. It presents a unique opportunity for CU Boulder students to interact and network with those individuals online.

Why?

Surveys of CU Boulder students demonstrated a significant interest in receiving green chemistry education. CU Green Labs and CHEMunity created the Green Chemistry Certificate Fellowship Program in 2018 to meet that need. The program enables a small number of CU Boulder students to participate in an online green chemistry certificate program at the University of Washington.

Who?

Undergraduate and graduate students at CU Boulder can apply for a fellowship. 

  • The CU Boulder Chemistry Department, Environmental Health and Safety, Chemical and Biological Engineering, RASEI, the Graduate School, and Sustainable CU have funded fellowships.
  • $2,730 per student.
What?

Fellowships are for an online certificate program offered through the University of Washington, consisting of three green chemistry courses. For more information on the program, visit the University of Washington Green Chemistry Certificate Program webpage.

The three online courses explore the following:

  • The 12 guiding principles of green chemistry.
  • Business drivers and barriers to implementing sustainable practices.
  • Frameworks for incorporating chemical toxicity and human health considerations into product design, material selections and supply chain decision-making.
  • Environmental, economic and societal benefits of green chemistry.
  • Latest research and regulatory developments in the field.
  • New tools for chemical design and methods for comparative chemical hazard assessment.
When?

The three online courses take place over an academic year of about nine months, starting in September and ending in June. CU Boulder students can apply for a fellowship each spring semester for the next academic year.  

Prerequisite requirement:

Students need to have completed Organic Chemistry 1 before starting the 1st online course.
