Inspired by TED Talks, Ed Talks are not-to-be-missed short, engaging presentations exploring topics like What Reality TV Taught Me about Everyday Assessment, Trauma as Peril and Potential in Schools, and more.

Dean Kathy Schultz has an explanation for the tensions behind recent teacher strikes and throughout education: distrust. Schultz has authored a new book called Distrust and Educational Change that draws on her experiences and makes the case that distrust is rarely talked about head-on but still capable of stifling even well-meaning attempts at change.

Amidst a turbulent political climate and activist- and youth-led social movements, many educators have been wondering not only how to teach but also how to parent during challenging times. We have partnered with Teaching Tolerance to publish Reading for Social Justice, a guide for educators and families interested in starting intergeneration social justice reading groups.

Bill Penuel has been elected to the National Academy of Education (NAEd), which advances high quality education research and its use in policy and practice. Penuel, a pioneer in the development of research-practice partnerships, joins several CU Boulder scholars who have been elected to the Academy and just 15 newly elected national members.

Three University of Colorado Boulder education faculty were recognized in the “Edu-Scholar Public Influence Rankings” as being among the nation’s top 200 researchers whose scholarship bridges academic and public audiences.

As the year comes to a close, we like to reflect back on progress and accomplishments as we also look ahead to future initiatives and to our steadfast dedication to our commitments to democracy, diversity, equity and justice. Here are 18 of our top highlights and milestones from the year 2018.

The CU Boulder Alumni Association honored Bethy Leonardi (PhD EFPP ’14) and Sara Staley (PhD C&I Literacy ’14), School of Education research associates and co-founders of A Queer Endeavor, with the 2018 Kalpana Chawla Award at the October annual awards ceremony, one of CU Boulder's oldest traditions.

At the fall series of Ed Talks, we learn about ways to challenge assumptions and create new paradigms around diversity and inclusion in education and beyond. The American Physical Society, a "leading voice in physics,” will honor CU Boulder scientists and educators as part of its spring 2019 awards. The Excellence in Physics Education Award will recognize an interdisciplinary CU Boulder team for their work with the Colorado Learning Assistant Program and the Learning Assistance Alliance, an international initiative based in the School of Education. Congrats to Valerie Otero, Laurie Langdon, and team.
