Meet aerospace Professor Iain Boyd

This episode focuses on Iain Boyd, the H.T. Sears Memorial Professor of Aerospace Engineering Sciences and Director of the Center for National Security Initiatives at CU Boulder. Hear about how his early interest in math got him from Scotland to England, and then to the U.S., where he’s now regarded as pioneer in hypersonics and a key figure in deploying computation and technology to solve our most pressing challenges. This episode is cross-posted from the ongoing Buff Innovator Insights podcast series hosted by the Research & Innovation Office which has interviewed several engineering faculty in the same format.

Learn about computer science professor Christine Lv's interdisciplinary work

This episode focuses on Lv's interdisciplinary work in the Department of Computer Science around awide range of application including Earth sciences, transportation electrification, renewable and sustainable energy, environmental science, and information needs in people’s daily lives. LV is also the campus director and co-Principal Investigator of the new $25 million dollar Engineering Research Center titled: Advancing Sustainability through Powered Infrastructure for Roadway Electrification. This episode is cross-posted from the ongoing Buff Innovator Insights podcast series hosted by the Research & Innovation Office which has interviewed several engineering faculty in the same format.

Meet the Antimicrobial Resistance, Mitigation and Outreach student group

Antimicrobial resistance—the ability of bacteria, viruses and fungi to adapt to common remedies, leading to increasingly difficult-to-treat superbugs—represents a looming threat to global health. In labs at CU Boulder and around the world, researchers are exploring strategies for revamping antibiotics to work in the face of resistant superbugs and investigating new, adaptive therapies that work in completely different ways. Now, a group of student researchers at CU Boulder is taking steps to improve public awareness of antimicrobial resistance. They hope to show that the average person doesn’t have to wait around, fingers crossed that scientists and policymakers will offer a solution—we all can play a role in curbing the problem.

Learn about the new biomedical engineering degree

Students within the College of Engineering and Applied Science took their first courses in the new Biomedical Engineering degree program in fall 2020. Consisting of four biomedical engineering degree programs – undergraduate minor, bachelor of science, master of science, and PhD – it is the first of its kind in the CU system. And no other university in the state currently offers a stand-alone undergraduate degree in the field. Hear professors Mark Borden and Charles Musgrave discuss the program in-depth and how it taps into a medical world that increasingly gears treatments to individuals and depends on rapidly evolving technologies.

Finally, he discusses his professional career which includes high-profile projects both in Colorado and abroad.

Meet alumnus and current professor in global engineering Evan Thomas
In this podcast, Vice Chancellor for Research & Innovation Terri Fiez talks with Evan Thomas, a professor of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering and Aerospace Engineering Sciences, and director of the Mortenson Center in Global Engineering. Thomas is an alumnus of the college and shares how his family’s interests in journalism, engineering and entrepreneurship – as well as his experiences with Engineers Without Borders –inspired him to tackle global poverty through his work and teaching. This episode is cross-posted from the ongoing Buff Innovator Insights podcast series hosted by the Research & Innovation Office which has interviewed several engineering faculty in the same format.
New international network explores how smell and odors lead to actions

Professor John Crimaldi from the Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering is the Network Lead for Odor2Action: a network of scientists, engineers, researchers, educators, students, and staff from 16 research institutions across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, all working to achieve an end-to-end understanding of how brains organize and process information from odors to guide adaptive behaviors. This episode is cross-posted from the ongoing Buff Innovator Insights podcast series hosted by the Research & Innovation Office which has interviewed several engineering faculty in the same format.
