Note: This position is physically based in Grand Junction, Colorado, and is only open to students who are enrolled in the CU Boulder Engineering Partnership Program with Colorado Mesa University.

Do you want to empower other engineering students in their success? Do you want to help your professors with their work and learn more about the topics that you are studying?

This position provides advising and mentoring to first- and second-year engineering students (as well as planning academic/social events) to assist in the success, retention, and graduation of engineering students.

If hired for this position, the Peer Coach must be able to attend a 2-3 hour training during the beginning of the fall semester.

Work load: approximately 2-5 hours per week for two semesters

Pay: $17 per hour for new coaches, $18.50 per hour for returning coaches in their second year, and $20 per hour for returning coaches in their third year with the program.

Peer Coach Responsibilities

  • Provide advising and mentoring for 15 to 25 first- and second-year engineering students including:
  • Advising students on course registration and academic policies
  • Mentoring students on transition to CMU and the future transition to upper-division coursework
  • Plan Peer Coaching events on a regular basis throughout the semester, based on Peer Coach interest, student need, and faculty advisor guidance
  • Organize 1:1 regular meetings with student mentees as needed
  • Document interactions with student mentees in a timely and thorough manner
  • Promote and attend social activities and workshops for student mentees
  • Hold regular office hours to help student mentees
  • Refer students to appropriate social and academic resources to assist in their success
  • Speak positively about and encourage students in their goals of pursuing the CMU/CU Boulder Partnership Program
  • Attend and assist with ENGR class activities as needed and directed by faculty advisors
  • Attend regular staff meetings and check in with partnership faculty/staff as needed
  • If a returning Peer Coach, assist with training and mentoring of new Peer Coaches
  • Optional Duties (based on interest and availability) - Grading/Laboratory Assistant
    • Grade assignments as needed for engineering courses, as instructed by professors
    • Adhere to student privacy and academic regulations when grading assignments
    • Set up laboratory equipment

Qualifications

  • Full-time junior or senior in mechanical, civil, or electrical and computer engineering engineering partnership program in Fall and Spring semesters.

  • Capable of careful documentation
  • Skilled at spreadsheet management
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Demonstrated ability to succeed academically and socially in the CMU/CU Boulder engineering partnership
