Assistant ChBE Professor Ankur Gupta received a $517,000, 5-year CAREER award to optimize performance of capacitive desalination and supercapacitor technologies. His research for the two disparate processes involves a technical commonality: porous electrodes to maximize performance.

Created in 2021, the initiative is a significant and strategic investment into translational quantum engineering research – especially in the field of quantum sensing, which has been a strength in the college for years. QEI specifically includes educational components, faculty hiring efforts, and dedicated lab space for collaboration with partners both on and off CU Boulder’s campus.

Professor Robert H. Davis is known throughout CU Boulder’s College of Engineering and Applied Science as an outstanding leader for his 25-year tenure as the Chemical and Biological Engineering department chair and then the dean of the college. Davis recently added another accolade to his extensive list of accomplishments: Distinguished Professor, the highest honor bestowed upon tenured faculty across the University of Colorado’s four campuses.

A team of University of Colorado researchers has developed a new strategy for transforming medical images, such as CT or MRI scans, into incredibly detailed 3D models on the computer. The advance marks an important step toward printing lifelike representations of human anatomy that medical professionals can squish, poke and prod in the real world.

Teaching Associate Professor Mike Soltys was selected as the 2023 winner of the Charles A. Hutchinson Memorial Teaching Award, which recognizes College of Engineering and Applied Science faculty who have made outstanding contributions to teaching.

Justin Pedersen, a senior majoring in aerospace engineering, participated in the program in the summer of 2022 through Professor Penny Axelrad’s group. He researched timing systems for small satellites through the program, a topic that is of interest to the private sector, and military and scientific groups working with satellites.

The Graduate School hosts its sixth annual Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Final Competition on Thursday, Feb. 2, in the UMC Glenn Miller Ballroom, from 4-6:30 p.m.

Undergraduate students looking for paid, hands-on experience in a research lab setting over summer break can begin applying online for the 2023 CU SPUR program on Feb. 13.

Gabrielle Dunn was introduced to civil engineering as a child hanging out at her parents’ office. Now a junior in CU Boulder’s civil engineering program with a water focus, Dunn has one professional paid internship under her belt, will complete another one this summer and in the fall will move into the Bachelor’s Accelerated Master’s program.
