Dear Faculty and Staff of the College of Engineering and Applied Science,

Attached to this message is a document showing a proposed set of changes to the College Rules.

These changes are the result of a process that started with a request from Dean Braun to update the way in which academic programs are reviewed and approved in the college; while that request remains the primary focus of these changes, a few additional updates were included as detailed below. The initial draft of the changes was reviewed by Dean Braun and the Associate/Assistant Deans. That review produced a second draft that was presented to a wider audience in the college consisting of department chairs, program directors, and the faculty responsible for overseeing the college’s undergraduate and graduate programs. That review produced a third draft which is now being distributed to the entire college.

The changes include:

  • a change to the structure of the graduate education council
  • a change to the responsibilities of the undergraduate and graduate education council
  • updates to workflows related to the review and approval of new courses, degrees, minors, certificates, etc.
  • removal of undergraduate academic policies from the rules to avoid duplication with information on the college website
  • the removal of positions and committees that are no longer used within the college
  • minor changes to fix typos, refine language, and update the names of positions referenced in the document.

The changes to the workflows referenced in the second bullet above are designed to better align the review process and the approval process of academic programs in the college.

As stated in the college rules, revisions require approval of a two-thirds vote of the voting members of the faculty of the college present at any regular or special meeting. Written notice of a proposed revision shall be given to members of the voting faculty at least 30 days in advance of any meeting in which a revision is to be considered. The revision may be made at any regular or special meeting of the faculty held during the academic year.

The college will host a meeting to review and vote on these changes in mid- to late February. That meeting is still being planned; an announcement will go out this month with details about the time, date, and location of that meeting. Update: Meeting set for 4 p.m. Feb. 15 at JSCBB Butcher Auditorium.

In the meantime, if you would like to provide feedback on these proposed changes, please send them to me or, if you would like, via the CU Engineering Feedback page located at: www.colorado.edu/engineering/feedback. Feedback submitted via that form is completely anonymous; just indicate that your comments should be routed to me.

Thank you,

Ken
