Kathryn Tobey, who recently retired as a Lockheed Martin executive, is joining the University of Colorado Boulder as a scholar in residence. CU Engineering Dean Bobby Braun today announced Tobey‘s appointment to the college’s Engineering Management Program.

“Kathy is a pathfinder. She excelled in the aerospace and defense fields and is a recognized industry leader in Colorado,” Braun said. “She’s also been a committed advocate for CU Engineering. In particular, our initiatives to increase connections to industry across the state and attract more women and broaden access to the engineering profession.”

Tobey spent 34 years at Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company, leaving as vice president and general manager of special programs, where she was responsible for a broad portfolio of advanced initiatives and national security space applications.

Her career experiences were focused on delivering high performance systems and innovative concepts for critical national security space applications, as well as spacecraft design, laser-based remote sensing systems, and Mars chemistry experiments. She also previously was their director of business development, where she led the integration of entrepreneurial activities across the company’s space, launch vehicle and missile divisions. Throughout her career she has held multiple leadership positions in subcontract and program management, space subsystem manufacturing, business development and system engineering.

“We’re thrilled that Kathy has decided to join our college and know that she will make valuable contributions to our student experience and the growth of our engineering community,” Braun said.

As a scholar in residence in the College of Engineering and Applied Science, Tobey will develop and teach courses for the graduate Engineering Management Program tailored with industry examples.

“CU Engineering promotes problem solvers who shape ideas and deliver results. I’m proud to join the faculty and help nurture the technical, entrepreneurial and leadership expertise of our students,” said Tobey.

Tobey has long been a familiar face at CU Boulder, serving as Lockheed Martin’s formal university executive, and has past experience on the Engineering Dean’s Advisory Committee and as chair of the Advisory Board for BOLD Center (Broadening Opportunities for Leadership Diversity). Tobey also served on the LM Executive Inclusion Council and is a trustee for the Women’s Foundation of Colorado.

She holds two degrees from CU Boulder (ChemEngr’84, MEngrMgmt’94), and in 2016 was honored with the university’s George Norlin Award, which celebrates recipients for excellence in their careers and devotion to the betterment of society and community.
