Classification & Discovering Events

The calendar platform provides a variety of tools that assist in finding the events that matter to you the most. We will breaks down what each of these tools are, and how you can use them to your advantage when discovering events!

There are four tools you can use to search for events. They are:

  • The search bar
  • Landing Pages for Places, and Groups
  • Filters
  • Tags

Search Bar

The search bar is one of the top tools for browsing your calendar, and it can be found at the top of each page of the events calendar. If you are looking for something specific, type relevant words or phrases in the search bar and press enter on your keyboard. You will be redirected to a search results page where results are organized by Events, Places, People, or Groups. If you would like to further browse results, select the View All link below each results section. This takes you to a results page for all events or landing pages based on your search terms.

To maximize your search results, sort your results using the Sort By options in the Filter Results drawer. You can choose to Sort By:

  • Relevance: Localist will display the results that closest match your search terms.
  • Date: A chronological display of your results.
  • Name: Alphabetical by the name of the events or landing pages.
  • Popularity: Results based on Localist's trending algorithm.

You may further refine your search by Experience, either In-Person or Virtual. You also have the option to subscribe to feeds of your event search results via one or more of the options in the Subscribe to Displayed Results section of the Filter drawer. Those options are:

Place Pages

Every in-person event is hosted at a location, so Place Pages provide you with context around where events will be hosted in our community. The calendar team already added all CU Boulder locations in the places directory. These pages will house all events hosted at a specific location in the community as well as further details about the location. They are all linked to the campus map.

Places can be filtered by the type of place such as:

  • Academic
  • Housing
  • Athletic
  • Off Campus
  • Theatre
  • Outdoor
  • Library
  • Museum

Group Pages

If Place Pages communicate context surrounding the where of your events, Group Pages provide details on the who. These pages are used to provide context surrounding the hosts of your event, and are used to bring various audiences together by highling events that share a common host, but take place at different locations.

Following a Landing Page

Following a Landing Page adds all the upcoming events assigned to the Place or Group to your personal plans in Localist. Upon following, you will begin to receive notifications the day before each event in the Landing Page as a reminder to attend.

If you would like to subscribe to a Landing Page's events outside of calendar platform, you can do so with the Subscribe options. Just click View Full Calendar under the Landing Page's Upcoming Events section - this will take you to a search results page for all upcoming events for your Landing Page. In the Filter drawer, select the feed of your choice at the bottom of the page.

Filters

Filters divide and assign events to various broad categories. They are located in the Filter Results drawer on your homepage:

The number in parenthesis next to each Filter item reflects the number of events assigned to it happening in the next 30 days. Filters are sorted by the number of events assigned to them, then, alphabetically when the count is at (0) to ensure you are shown the most popular or prolific Filter items first.

If you are looking for a specific kind of event, select multiple Filter items by checking the box next to each Filter item to narrow your results. Once your selection has been made, click Apply

For example, if you would like to attend a lecture on diversity targeted towards current students, you'll select the following Filter Items on your platform:

  • In Event Types select Lectures & Presentations
  • In Topic select Diversity & Inclusion
  • In Target Audience select Current Students

Upon clicking Apply Filters, you will be redirected to a search results page for all events assigned to the Filters you choose. On this page you have flexibility in how events are presented to you with the Sort By options in the Filter drawer, and you can filter results by date ranges using the Sort By options. You can view the following date ranges:

  • Today: Events happening on the current date
  • Next 7 Days: Events happening in the next 7 days from the current date
  • Next 30 Days: Events happening in the next rolling 30 days

Select a Date on the Calendar: Use the mini-calendar to select a 7-day date range in the month of your choosing. Click on the arrows to toggle to the desired month and click on a date. You will be able to see up to 7 days in the future from your selected date.

If the Hide Recurring Events Slider is toggled on in the Filter Events drawer, this will remove all events that include multiple instances from your event results.

Tags

Tags are ultra-specific categories that are assigned to events, they can reflect things like Homecoming, Commencement, a concert series, or an exhibition. If you know the specific Tag that you're searching for, type it into the search bar to see other events assigned to it.

If you click into an event, you can see any Tags assigned to the event in the Event Details box. Click on a Tag from the event page redirects to a search results page for all events assigned to the Tag.
