In the first workshop we took a free-form discussion approach to letting the community “vote up” the topics of discussion. From this we have distilled 4 themes and each theme will be given a particular session above. Of course there is overlap in each but somewhat of a shift in emphasis or focus in each session.
Session A, Essential Components of FDSI, will form breakout groups focused on what have emerged as key components of FDSI software infrastructure needs. We envision the following breakout groups:
- Experimental data linkage and data management
- Validation and data analytics
- Model hierarchies and coordination of models
- Simulation problem definition, execution, and control
- Post processing of data from experiments and simulations.
Session B, FDSI Software Infrastructure Sharing, discusses the software infrastructure that the community is willing to share to allow it to be developed by the community in a sustainable way. We envision parallel sessions to identify specific software packages to be shared, individuals willing to serve as liaisons to those packages’ software development communities, and identify developments that are of the greatest interest to the community.
Session C, Community sourced Plan, is targeted towards a distillation of the community input on a variety of topics that form the final report which NSF describes as a business plan for the future institute. Potential breakout topics in this area include:
- Community-sourced description of the need for the Institute – get a list, then have part of a session devoted to making sure that we are all on the same page wrt this. What are the grand challenges in our discipline?
- Community-sourced opportunities/role for the Institute in each of the criteria listed under SI2.
- Community ideas for near-,mid- and long-term goals for the Institute. What will it enable?
- Community ideas for sustaining the Institute, including how to bring in/develop new directions and ideas (“pathways to innovation”).
- Outreach – how do we expand reach in the research community? Outside the community? Science communication/PR? Workforce development?
- Educational component: how will we design an educational program? What works elsewhere in the community, what doesn’t? Are we thinking about online classes/e-workshops/discussion groups through FDSI? Let’s get community best practices documented.
Session D, Governance, Leadership Team Composition, and Prioritization of FDSI Budget/Effort, brings the discussion to a more detailed set of decisions regarding budgets and policy. Potential breakouts in this session include:
- What will be the governance model for FDSI?
- How will we cultivate growth of the leadership team from within the community?
- Resource allocation to hiring full time software engineers to make component codes from the community more sustainable by a broader community, easier to adopt by a larger user community, and more interoperable.
- Resources allocated to targeted research to develop new software that fills gaps (something like the software fellows program of MOLSI?),
- Resources allocated to education and outreach,
- Resources allocated to data stewardship,
- Resources allocated to other?
Air Travel
The closest airport is Denver International Airport (DIA). By car, it is about a 45 minute drive to CU Boulder. We urge you to consider using public transportation during your visit to Boulder. From Denver International Airport:
Green Ride airport shuttle: Cost: $30 one-way.
SkyRide Bus Service: Bus AB - Boulder / US 36 to Denver Airport Station
Driving Directions
If you drive from the airport, there is a north/toll route (E-470 to Northwest Parkway to US-36) or a south/free route along (I-70 to I-270 to US-36). You should definitely take the toll route during morning/evening rush hours.
