So you want to be a graphic designer?
If you’re interested in drawing, content creation or other creative projects, a career in graphic design may be for you. There are many ways to gain valuable experience and develop skills for a graphic design career in your academic journey at CU Boulder. Here’s how to get started.
Join a student organization
Almost every club or student organization on campus has a graphic design position. This person creates flyers, social media posts and other promotional items. Find an organization that fits your interests and volunteer to be a graphic designer. If you’re not sure where to start, stop by the Center for Student Involvement for help.
In addition to artistic ability, the top skills a graphic designer needs are time management, communication and public speaking. You can begin to develop these skills (and more!) through your involvement in a student organization.
Gain experience
Local businesses and non-profit organizations often seek help creating a logo or poster designs. Develop on-the-job skills with a part-time job or volunteer opportunity.
- Student Employment: Log in and search using keywords such as “graphic designer.”
- Handshake: Log in and search by industry, job function or keyword.
- Volunteer Resource Center: Search the calendar or organization database.
Connect with other graphic designers
